During the 2019–20 playoffs, Mahomes led the Chiefs to Super Bowl LIV, their first Super Bowl appearance in 50 years, where they defeated the San Francisco 49ers for their first Super Bowl victory since 1970.  Mahomes was awarded the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player for his performance, the second African American quarterback to win the award after Doug Williams, and youngest overall.  During the 2022-23 season, against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII, Mahomes reaggravated his ankle late in the second quarter, but was able to stay in and led Kansas City to a touchdown on their first three drives of the second half, leading the Chiefs to a 38–35 win over the Eagles.  He was awarded his second career Super Bowl MVP for his efforts.
